Now let's discuss the solution for the given sentences. also need to understand the verb and its importance.
What is a verb ???  for what purpose it is used in any English sentence??
In English, a "verb" is a word used to describe an action. Every word that is used as happening of anything any action or occurrence is called a verb.
examples are, play, eating, sleeping, reading, etc. So now verb is a very understandable word as it is used very commonly.
Following are the sentences given to us to solve them by filling the blanks.
Creative writing exercise 1 batch 01

above are the 10 sentences, Now if you have a good grip on English grammar only then you can solve and fill these blanks.
Let's solve this one by one.
  • they had been in Lahore for 20 years. ( be)
In the first sentence, a specific number of years are mentioned, and the use of "for" before date or time confirms that this sentence is of the present perfect or past perfect tense.
so I have used "had been" to complete the sentence.
  • I saw a wonderful film in the cinema last night. (See)
this sentence is clearly can be identified that is from past simple tense and I have used 2nd form of the verb to complete this sentence.
  • The sun rose at 6:38 yesterday morning. (rise)
from looking at the time and the word "yesterday" it's clear that this sentence is from the past indefinite. So I have used the second form of rising which is rose.
  • The sun was shining when the climber reached the mount Everest. (shine)
Now this sentence has two parts the last part is from past indefinite tense and the 1st half is past continuous tense so I have used the helping verb "was" for sun and I have added "ing" with the first form of "shine".
  • I promise that I will not tell this secret to anyone. (not tell)
I have a strong feeling that this sentence is from future simple tense and so I have used "will not tell" in the blank. You guys can read it carefully and you will also feel that this should be from future tense.
  • Unfortunately, Just as we got to the airport their plane took off. (take)
In this sentence first part clearly tells us that this sentence is from past tense and using the second form of "take" will be the right idea. So fill in the blank with "took" which is the second form of "take".
  • They go to the movies only once in a while. (go)
this is the simplest sentence in which only information is passed. This sentence is from the present simple tense and only the first form of the verb will be used.
  • I was tired yesterday because I did not sleep well the night before. ( not sleep)
The first half is in past tense and indicates that the second part should be in the past tense as well, So I used "did not sleep" to complete the sentence. In past indefinite negative sentences, we use "did not" as a helping verb, and then the 1st form of the verb is used instead of the 2nd form.
  • They are living in an apartment right now because they can't find a cheap house. (live)
Because looking at the last part of the sentence, it seems that they are living in an apartment, So this tells us that in 1st half "are living" will be used to complete the sentence.
"are" is a helping verb for present continuous tense and just because this sentence is continuous so helping verb "are" and "ing" with the first form of the verb will be used to fill in the blank.
  • Everyone was sleeping when the earthquake hit the small town. (sleep)

In this sentence, we can see "when the earthquake hit the small town" is a story line or news that happened in the past tense, So this should be in past tense, and "was sleeping" will be used in the blank part of this sentence to make it complete.
So these were the 10  sentense from differnt types of tenses and you can solve them by paying some attention on each line.
You have the option of searching on google and take as mush help as you can from goole as well.
